Comments from Participating Teachers
at
Cane Creek Elementary School and Jere Whitson Elementary School,
Cookeville, Tennessee

These comments are taken from a survey of participating teachers at the end of the 1997-1998 school year.  These surveys were used to highlight positive aspects of our program and set goals for improvement for next year's America Reads initiative.

Mary Ann Danner, 1st Grade Teacher, Cane Creek Elementary School

I have been extremely impressed with the objectives of this program.  The tutor has been a tremendous asset to our classroom.  I have watched my student who is being tutored gain confidence as well as skills.  The special attention he gets encourages him to stay on task.  The tutor is always asking about what we're doing and comes in prepared each week.  I am glad to know the program goes throughout the year.  We will see real progress throughout the year.  It allows us to have a scope-and-sequence for the student.  I am extremely impressed with this program.

Mrs. Matthews, 3rd Grade Teacher, Jere Whitson Elementary School

I am expecting "great results" with this program.  Each of the students will improve from having totally individualized help 30 minutes a day for an entire year.  I expect test scores to soar!  I think a strong point is that in the lower grades (1st and 2nd) the students that need to can remain in the program.  I cannot see anything but positive results coming out of this tutoring program.

We are stressing the results for elementary students - I can also see positive results for the college students.  It is a rare treat for these students to see the "light come on" in a student's eye as he or she masters a skill!  It also gives the college students a chance to contribute to society in their college life.

Cindy Putman, 3rd Grade Teacher, Cane Creek Elementary School

I think the program is excellent.  I wish I had more students from the program so more kids could benefit.  I am delighted that this is the start of an on-going relationship for my student and the TTU tutor.  The fact that this is not just a six-week period and then its over is a real plus!  The tutor has been excellent.  He has gone above the "call of duty" to help me.  I appreciate all the notes, letters, and other types of information sent from the University.  I feel like I know what is going on and can see results.  Please try to develop this program so it can stay an active part of our school. SEND MORE TUTORS - OUR CHILDREN NEED THEM.  Not just for reading but because the tutor makes my student feel important and everyone needs to feel special.

Mrs. Bingham, 2nd Grade, Cane Creek Elementary School

I believe America Reads is a very positive program, especially positive for the student being tutored.  Sometimes it might help if tutoring is done on specific days in the regular classroom setting.  Students are actually able to see their progress and be very proud of it!  I believe the program is helpful for all parties involved.

Mrs. Hannah, 2nd Grade, Cane Creek Elementary School

The program is great.  The student's individual needs are met.  The lessons are focused on the interests of the student.

Mrs. Lloyd, 2nd Grade, Cane Creek Elementary School

America Reads is an extremely beneficial program.  I like the fact that the classroom teacher picks the student with whom the tutor will work.  Casey (tutor) has been able to review with (student) and spend time with him, which he does not get at  home.  (Student) is from a large family, and his mother works nights, which does not leave much time for individual attention for him.  Scheduling is a common problem in classrooms as you know.  We have worked around this; however,  a more convenient time would be during a time when other children are out of the room as well.  I realize the tutors' work schedules must also be taken into consideration.  We'll take advantage and make the best of the situation!

Mrs. Mackie, 2nd Grade, Cane Creek Elementary School

My student is excited about working with Ms. Becky.  She comes into the classroom each day, reads her poem to me, and she does well.  She also reads it aloud to our class.  To top it off, she punches a hole in her reading "pumpkin."  She feels much better about herself and reading.  From my previous comments, I hope you can "see" my excitement with this program.  I appreciate the positive feelings.  My student has had a great amount of success, many small things, but an overall positive impact in several areas.  She "feels" like she can read, she has more confidence, and she approaches lessons like, "I can do this."  My one concern is retention of strategies and vocabulary.  Since this is a year-long program, I have great hope that this concern will take care of itself.  Thank you for initiating a program like America Reads.

Mrs. Methvin, 1st Grade, Cane Creek Elementary School

I think that this is a wonderful program.  Children greatly benefit from having one person totally involved in their learning.  I am excited to see the progress.  The student is feeling better about himself and is reading books the tutor provides.  He is bringing in activities that help him learn and that excite him also.

Kim Pryor, 1st Grade, Cane Creek Elementary School

I am so pleased that I have had the opportunity to help a child by assigning her a tutor.  I feel that this is an excellent program and we need more tutors available to help children by given one-on-one instruction, affection, and attention.  It appears that your program has great planning ideas and no changes are needed from my observations!  Keep working and let's get more tutors to help children who are in need.  I am so glad I was chosen to have a tutor and I hope to be a part of your program for many years to come.  Thanks a million for all the hard work!
