Cloze Procedure A cloze procedure is a "fill-in-the-blanks" activity where the learner uses clues from the context to supply words that have been deliberately removed from the text.4
DURING reading strategies During reading activities:
  • enhance the interactions between the students and the text
  • allow students to respond personally to works of literature and to explore and compare their responses to those of others 
  • facilitate students' comprehension
  • focus students' attention on particular themes, issues, or characters
  • encourage students to react to ideas, events, and characters

Interest Inventory "An interest inventory is a testing instrument designed for the purpose of measuring and evaluating the level of an individual's interest in, or preference for, a variety of activities; also known as interest test. Narrative text tells a story - i.e., Holes by Louis Sachar
Onset-Rime Segmentation  Separating a word into the onset, the consonant(s) at the start of a syllable, and the rime, the remainder of the syllable. For example, in "swift," "sw" is the onset and "ift" is the rime.2
PRE-reading strategies Prereading activities:
  • activate and build background knowledge on topics or concepts addressed in the book
  • arouse students' curiosity, and motivate them to read
  • promote personal responses to text by signaling students that their experiences, ideas, and thoughts matter
  • provide a forum for eliciting students' feelings and reactions to ideas and issues suggested by a reading selection before interacting with those ideas in the text
  • prompt students to examine their own beliefs3 (page 18)
POST-reading strategies Post-reading activities:
  • encourage reflection on ideas, themes, and issues encountered in the book
  • facilitate analysis and synthesis of ideas
  • promote personal responses and connections to ideas, themes, and issues encountered in the book
  • extend comprehension beyond the immediate text

Reading Comprehension  The ability to understand written language. Comprehension includes both getting the gist of the meaning and interpreting the meaning by relating it to other ideas, drawing inferences, making comparisons and asking questions about it.2
