TTU America Reads Goes West, Young Man!
Five America Reads tutors, Pam Petty, America Reads Program
Director at TTU, and steering committee members Dean Karen Adams and Dr. Elinor
Ross traveled across the U.S. to participate in the International Reading
Association's National Conference in San Diego, California, in May, 1999.
This trip was the culmination of months of preparation for Pam and the America
Reads students. Together they had raised the $3000 necessary to cover the
students' travel expenses. This money was raised through the efforts of
all America Reads tutors involved in the program and through generous donations
of individuals, on-campus groups (SMAC), and local businesses.
Local newspapers highlight our fundraising and outreach
efforts.
Our America Reads tutors prepared a presentation for the IRA Conference and presented on May 5, 1999. The presentation was entitled, "Giving Literacy Wings: America Reads in Action." Each of the five students, Michelle Colson, Becky Brady, Stephanie Klotz, Craig Breen, and Rex Crabtree participated in the presentation, discussing a different aspect of our program. Tutors attended sessions on literacy and topics of interest related to their majors at Tennessee Tech. The five-day conference took most of our time, but we were able to work in a trip to the world famous San Diego Zoo and a quick trip south-of-the-border to Tijuana. Enjoy our photos!
