"Parents and Reading Fair"
November 3, 1998
Methodist Church Social Building
Sponsored by the Tennessee Technological University Chapter of the International Reading Association, this was the first annual "Parents and Reading Fair" designed to bring parents and educators together to discuss literacy issues, resources, and concerns. Special education teachers, reading specialists, classroom teachers, and other educational professionals were present to offer parents advice, listen to their concerns, and suggest possible resources. Storytelling, children's literature read-alouds, and other activities were provided as entertainment and enrichment for the children who visited with their parents.
The TTU America Reads tutors set up a booth and invited all the children they tutored and their parents to attend. We gave a new book to each tutoring child that attended and took pictures with parents and other attendees. We considered our participation in this event to be a great success in helping others understand our function and goals.

Presentations at the TTU Chapters of IRA and Phi Delta Kappa
TTU America Reads tutors accepted speaking engagements at meetings of the local chapter of the International Reading Association and the local chapter of Phi Delta Kappa. Each speaking opportunity allowed students to describe the America Reads program. Tutors also shared their personal experiences while participating in this program.
