ICAN is a chance.  A chance to get it right.  A chance to change.  A chance to meet learning head-on and kick it.  ICAN is by invitation only and only those serious about getting it right need accept the invitation.  ICAN is a challenge.  If you have never seen your best work, we will help you find it.  If you think you can beat this system and leave without LOVING to learn - think again.  This world is about proving yourself.  Prove to yourself that you have what it takes to make a good life.  Think YOUCAN?  We do.

"There is always one moment in childhood when the door
opens and lets the future in."

OPEN RESPONSE QUESTION

Today's reading will come from this webpage:  http://www.liveink.com/cfyh.htm

Select a story and then follow the directions on the screen.  The story will LOOK like a poem, but it is written that way to help you learn to better phrase sentences as you read - which equals better understanding of what you read.

Writing for today is listed below. Do your best work.  Do your best work. Dig.  Fight with the words till they fall on the page the way you want them to.

Essay topic:  The absolute BEST music on the market is _____________________.  Make at least 3 just justifications and then SUPPORT those justifications with EXAMPLES or personal stories.  Got it?  The answer is YES.

There will be a MAJOR writing every day.  Each time you are asked to write you will be expected to follow the WRITING PROCESS:

1)  Prewriting

2)  Organizing

3)  Drafting

Once a week you will be asked to take ONE piece of writing you have done and revise it based on feedback from  your instructor(s).  Then you will edit your writing for grammar and spelling and send Dr. Petty a FINISHED and POLISHED writing.  The ONLY way writing gets better is to write! We will write.  YOU will write.  You will follow the writing process.

NOTE:  Instructors might find these useful resources for planning mini-lessons to help students improve in each step of the writing process:

Open Response questions from the book:  Bucking the Sarge --

Luther talks about his mom quite a bit.  All teenagers tend to have complaints about their parents.  Luther is upset and disappointed with his mom for many reasons.  Think about YOUR parents and respond to ONE of the following:

I am most proud of my mother (father) when _____________________

I am most unhappy with my mother (father) when ______________________

BEFORE we write, we always pre-write.  To prepare you to do a good job on this open response question do the following:

1.  Make a table that looks like this and fill it in:

mother (or father) good features                     mother (or father) bad features

2.  Put as many characteristics under each heading as you can think of.

3.  Each characteristic is a story - you know your mom is ??? because you have seen her ????   Circle the words that focus on a story you want to tell.

4.  Don't worry about sentences or spelling - just write your thoughts.  If you type slowly, write your thoughts down first and then type them in.

Yes, I know writing is a pain.  Writing is a pain for everyone who puts thoughts down on paper.  Do it anyway.  It does not matter that you don't want to write.  It does not matter that you don't think you have anything to say.  Write.

Send your response to:  pam@pampetty.com I will read, provide feedback and send you an email back regarding this piece.  Select ONE writing per week and follow my suggestions, then re-submit it to me.  This should be a proofed copy with no grammar errors and no spelling errors.  THOUGHTS rein supreme!
Dr. Petty's recent FINDS:

Student Profiles:  http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2006/06/22/41s_profile.h25.html

bullet thought it might be a good comprehension (and life) lesson to have each student (or could be done in pairs) read an article and then summarize the key points for others (orally).   Then a list could be made of all the “barriers” the kids mentioned to keep them from being successful in school.  From there the students could select the TOP BARRIER that they relate to and write a personal narrative about how/why he/she identifies with that barrier and what he/she might do to overcome the barrier.

I AM POEM:  http://freeology.com/formsforteachers/pdf/iampoem.pdf

*An activity that uses M & M's to help students learn story elements.  I thought this might be a fun review and a good way to build in some accountability to listening to one of the first read-alouds, as they will have to listen to be able to answer the questions and get to eat the M&M's.
http://www.cherylsigmon.com/pdf/MandMActivityexplanation.pdf

*A response sheet that could be used as a writing activity after listening to a read-aloud.  *Really this could be used with WeeCAN as well.  We'd probably want to write in the date and title for them.
http://www.cherylsigmon.com/pdf/Handout-2-book-response.pdf

*A good pre-reading activity (for Dark Sons perhaps?).  The kids could go back to it after reading and revisit predictions.
http://www.cherylsigmon.com/pdf/Prove-It-for-Primary.pdf

*A page of bookmarks.  Each child could have one before reading a chapter silently or with a partner to record thoughts on.
