Frequently Asked Questions about Web Design

Q.  How do I design my websites?

A.   You need a place to "compose" your website just like you would need a word processing program to write a paper.  You actually have several options - each with pluses and minuses.

  • Composing Program Pluses Minuses

    FrontPage
    or FrontPage Express

    DOWNLOAD FRONT PAGE EXPRESS:  http://sssd.k12.ar.us/departments/dts/training/fp.htm

    Front Page Express Tutorial:  http://accessfp.net/fpexpress.htm

    • FrontPage is a menu-driven program that is easy to use with some practice
    • FrontPage Express comes free with Internet Explorer
    • Has many features not found on Composer/FrontPage
    • Gives designer GREAT control over the design of the sites
    • You have to FTP the files onto WKU's server
    • Takes some practice to become familiar with how to use the program to design web pages
    • Sometimes MSN does not offer FrontPage Express in its free software updates
    • FrontPage (the "big" version) is somewhat expensive to purchase and you would STILL need to find some free web space
    • WKU:WKU WebMaster's Corner
      - Go to this site to publish your website on WKU's server.

FrontPage and IE are preferable programs.

    Netscape
    Composer

NOTE:  How can I publish using Composer from home or other remote site?
Answer (compliments of Donna Thompson, Fort Knox):

    1. IF you have already installed Netscape 7.0, UNINSTALL it from your  computer.
    2. Go to www.netscape.com
    3. On far right of screen, click on Browser Center
    4. At new screen, click on Produce Archives
    5. At new screen, select to download Version 4.7x
    6. At new screen, scroll down until you see 4.79 English Netscape Communicator for Windows 95, 98, or NT Complete Install (I have XP and it worked on my computer)
    7. Click to download.  It took me 1 hour and 15 minutes to download.
    8. I then went to Composer  and it looked like what we saw on the screen on campus.  I did a test publish of my home page and it worked.
    • Comes free with Netscape
    • Available on all on-campus computers
    • EASY to use

    • Not as many features as available in other types of programs
    • Takes some practice to become familiar with how to use the program to design web pages
    • After designing the pages, you still have to go on-line and find some free web space (we HIGHLY recommend using the FREE space you have at WKU:WKU WebMaster's Corner
      - Go to this site to publish your website on WKU's server.
I apologize for the CAPITAL letters in the first few questions/answers listed below - the info was copied and pasted from email messages I sent students with my replies woven within their original message - in order to make my comments easy to find (html was not an option) I had to use caps.  Hard to read, isn't it?  Remember that when you use all CAPS.

1.  Question:  Where do I find little symbols to put beside my titles within my table?

YOU CAN ACTUALLY GO TO MY HOMEPAGE AND LOOK IN THE GREEN/BLUE TABLE (SCROLL DOWN) ... YOU WILL SEE LITTLE STARS, LADYBUGS, APPLES, ETC. THE ONES I SHOWED IN OUR SESSION ON TUESDAY CAME FROM HEE YUN'S WEBSITE (http://www.hulamall.com/hawclip/clip04.htm) ... JUST PUT A LINK AT THE BOTTOM OF YOUR WEBPAGE THAT LEADS BACK TO THE WEBPAGE WHERE YOU GOT THE GRAPHICS (DON'T LINK BACK TO MY PAGE AS I AM NOT THE ORIGINAL ARTIST FOR THOSE IMAGES).

2.  Question:  If I had wanted to put "Welcome to Susie's Homepage" within a table with a white background should I have made the table first?

YES. MAKE THE TABLE - RIGHT CLICK IN IT AND CLICK TABLE PROPERTIES ... THEN MAKE IT THE SIZE, COLOR, JUSTIFICATION YOU WANT. THEN TYPE THE INFORMATION YOU WANT IN IT (OR INSERT A WELCOME GRAPHIC - WHATEVER YOU WANT).
3.  Question:  Whenever I insert my images I cannot move them and they end up making my text move. How do I place them exactly where I want them?

TABLES ARE YOUR BEST FRIEND. MAKE TABLES AND THEN RIGHT CLICK IN THEM AND CHANGE THE BORDER SIZE TO 0 SO THEY LINES WON'T SHOW UP WHEN YOU PUT THE WEBPAGE ON THE INTERNET - THEN THE IMAGES AND TEXT WON'T "MOVE AROUND" ON THE PAGE.

4.  Question:  Can you make an image or photo your background as a single picture or will it always be multiplied?

DEPENDS ON HOW THE IMAGE IS CONFIGURED. WITHOUT ADOBE PHOTOSHOP OR SOME OTHER TYPE OF PHOTO EDITING SOFTWARE YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO MANIPULATE THE IMAGES.

5.  Question:  How do I get creative fonts or text effects on my Welcome to part?

YOU CAN GO TO http://www.cooltext.com or http://www.flamingtext.com (that is my fav) and generate new banners OR you can go to view and then toolbars and then click on DRAWING ... WHEN THE DRAWING TOOLBAR APPEARS YOU CAN CLICK ON TEXT ART AND GENERATE THE IMAGE THAT WAY

6.  Question:  On my index.htm, am I supposed to insert a hyperlink on each title within my table like I did my name or am I supposed to do something different?

YES, YOU HIGHLIGHT WHAT YOU WANT TO HYPERLINK AND THEN CLICK ON THE "WORLD WITH THE PAPERCLIP" AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN. INSTEAD OF TYPING IN "mailto:" YOU EITHER TYPE IN THE URL YOU WANT TO LINK TO OR IF YOU ARE LINKING TO A WEBPAGE THAT IS ALREADY ON THE INTERNET, YOU CAN GO TO THE WEBPAGE, CLICK IN THE ADDRESS LINE AND THEN COPY THE URL. GO BACK TO THE PAGE YOU ARE MAKING AND PASTE THE URL IN THE BOX THAT POPS UP WHEN YOU CLICK ON THE "WORLD WITH THE PAPERCLIP" AND CLICK OK. IF YOU ARE MAKING HYPERLINKS TO YOUR NEW PAGES THEY WILL ALL BE MADE THE SAME WAY WITH ONLY THE FILENAMES CHANGING AS DEMONSTRATED BELOW:

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/webquest.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/teacher.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/student.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/voc.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/pre.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/during.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/post.html

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/vita.html

If you make Word documents for some of your voc/pre/during/post strategies, you would link the pages like this:

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/voc.doc

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/pre.doc and so forth ... Same way for linking a PowerPoint presentation:

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/voc.ppt

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/pre.ppt

7.  Q.  How many web pages are required in all and what do I name them?

A.  You are required to develop a homepage, a webquest portal page, a teacher page, a student page, and any other pages you need to be able to provide vocabulary, pre-reading, during reading, and post reading instruction, but you are welcome to do MORE than that.  An example might be adding a button for your Philosophy of Education.  Your pages should be named as follows:

Title of Page HTML File Name
(click on each filename to view a template for that page)
Homepage  index.html (required)
Vita (this is your resume) vita.html  (optional)
Literacy Vignette vignette.html (optional)
Social Studies ss.html (ask ELED 407 professor)
Teaching and Learning Strategies strategies.html (ask ELED 365 professor)
WebQuest webquest.html (required in LTCY 420)
Teacher Page (part of WebQuest) teacher.html (required in LTCY 420)
Student Page (part of WebQuest) student.html (required in LTCY 420)
Auxiliary pages for WebQuest as needed vocabulary.html
pre.html
during.html
post.html

(required as needed in LTCY 420 - all forms/handouts you reference must be made and included)

Math math.html (required for Block 2)
Science science.html (required for Block 2)
8.  Q.  How can I link a WORD document so that I do NOT lose my formatting (like I do when I paste the text in FrontPage)?

1)  Type your work in Microsoft Word.

2)  Open the webpage where you want the link to your document to occur.

3)  Make your link ... I am going to make a link right here to a Word document titled:  waltonscrying.doc

     - my link will look like this:  http://www.pampetty.com/waltonscrying.doc
                 (click in the box below)

4)  Now here is the trick ... you have to FTP the .doc file to the server.  It works just like doing an FTP for any other file.  Go to the Technology for Teachers page and download an ftp program ... then go to the WKU Publishing link on the Technology for Teachers page and follow the directions for uploading files using an ftp program.

5)  Anyone wishing to VIEW the .doc files MUST have Word.  In other words, if the above link to "Waltons Crying" did not open on your computer, you do not have Microsoft Word.

6)  Your formatting will be EXACTLY as you had it in Word on your computer and will print out nicely for those who want a copy.

Get it?  Works the SAME way for PowerPoint only the extension is .ppt
Example:  http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/filename.ppt

9.  Q.  How can I find out about my WKU email account so that I can publish on WKU's server?

A.  Go to this website and look for the information you need:  http://www.wku.edu/Webmaster/

A.  Go to: http://webmail.wku.edu and follow the link to TORI to find out your WKU email address and password.

10.  Q.  Where can I find a Composer Tutorial if I am using Netscape?

A.  Right here:  http://www2.wku.edu/www/webpages/learnComposer.htmlx  - for using Composer

A.  Right here:  http://www2.wku.edu/www/webpages/ftp.htmlx - for FTP instructions (transferring your files to the WKU server - "publishing" in other words)

12.  Q.  Who can help me if I get stuck?

A.  Dr. Petty has offered to help students with whatever technical support she can provide - that does not mean she knows all the answers to all the questions ... it means you are welcome to ask and she will do her best to find out for you.

A.  http://www.pampetty.com/techtraining.htm

13.  Q.  Will I make a lower grade on this assignment if I ask for help?

A.  No.  This assignment is about learning, not about punishing those who ARE learning.  You need help ... ask for it.  You are guaranteed success on this assignment.

14.  Q.  How do I get my Vita, Unit, and Vignette (or other text files) onto a page in Composer/FrontPage if I select to include those?

A.  1.  Click "New Page" while in your file manager in Composer/FrontPage.

2.  You can set your background now or wait until later.

3.  NOW, go open your Word (or other) document where you typed your vita; COPY that page (control "A" (selects all), then control "C" (copies).

4.  GO BACK to your opened VITA page in Composer/FrontPage, put your cursor on the page and click one time.  Then hold down the control key and the "V" key at the same time ... this will PASTE the text onto the screen.

5.  You may need to redo some bolding, centering, etc. but that is it.  When it looks like you want it to look, click save, and type in the file name (vita.html, vignette.html, etc).  Waa-Laa.

15.  Q.  What should I do if I have tried and tried and am losing my will to live?

A.  Email Dr, Petty and attach the html (Composer/FrontPage) file you are working on.  Include a description of what you are trying to accomplish. She will go in and patch things up for you.  No problem.  While she is working on your files, do one of the following:  a) take a long walk; b) take a long bath; c) read something totally unassociated with school; d) call your best friend; e) eat chocolate (personal favorite).

A.  http://www.pampetty.com/techtraining.htm

16.  Q:  How do I make LINKS in Composer/FrontPage?

A.  If you are trying to link the buttons on your index page to the other pages you have designed (vita, vignette, etc), do the following:

1.  Highlight the button or text you want to link (example:  highlight VITA).

2.  Click on the LINK button at the top of the screen (the world with the paperclip icon).

3.  When the pop up box opens, key in the URL you are trying to link to.   It should look something like this:  http://www.wku.edu/~whateveryourusernameis/whateveryourfilenameis.html

Another example:  If you username is smithab    and you are linking your vita ... what you type in would look like this:

http://www.wku.edu/~smithab/vita.html

4.  Click OK at the bottom of the screen - the pop up box will disappear.

5.  Now, make other links, continue to edit, or just click SAVE and your index page will be updated ... GO to your URL on the INTERNET ... click on the buttons you just linked and they should take you to your new pages.  REMEMBER:  You must "publish" this page on the Internet before it will appear there.

MOST COMMON ERROR:  Folks are linking the buttons correctly and then going back their index file page IN Composer/FrontPage expecting to be able to click on the button and go somewhere .... your page is in FILE form there, not LIVE on the Internet.  Open another window in Explorer or Netscape ... type in your URL for your index page and THEN try clicking the buttons.

RELOAD/REFRESH the page in your browser or you will NOT see your updates/changes.

17.  Question:  How can I publish using Composer/FrontPage from home or other remote site?

Answer (compliments of Donna Thompson, Fort Knox):

I found out how to publish from home.
  1. I removed Netscape 7.0 from my computer.
  8. I then went to Composer/FrontPage and it looked like what we saw on the screen on campus.  I did a test publish of my home page and it worked.
I am not sure that if you created your home page with Netscape Composer/FrontPage 7.0 that you can publish with Version 4.79.  I did and it worked but I had a bare bones home page.  I will create my new one with Version 4.79.

18.  Question:  Where can I find a File Transfer Protocol (ftp) program for FREE?

Answer:  Go here:  http://www.csu.edu.au/webpublishing/install_body.htm   Download the LE version - that version is free to educators.

NOTE AGAIN:  I (Dr. Petty) use the WS_FTP program all the time and don't have any trouble with the compatibility with WKU's server - it is the only FTP program that I use.  The trick is in getting the "fields" filled in properly.

You might want to print this page and then refer to it as you work through the "details" and bumps in the road on your web pages.

Common Web Design Problems:

19.  Problem: Links Don't Work

FIX 1: Make sure you put http:// in the URL you type in. It should look

like this:

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername (or whatever you are trying to link)

FIX 2: Check the URL to make sure it is correct ... when linking to public sites (like an Amazon page) it is best to go to the site and COPY the URL in the address line, then paste it in the LINK box in Composer (FrontPage, etc).

FIX 3: You MUST put the extension on the end of the URL (the only exception is the index page). In other words, a URL would look like this: http://www.pampetty.com/techtraining.htm

20.  Problem: Image Pulling off the "A" or "C" Drive:

FIX: open your html page in FrontPage Express .... right click on a graphic ... you will see a box pop up ... select image properties ... remove all the STUFF BEFORE the actual name of your graphic ... you will see lots of stuff like:

file:///A:/bus.gif that sort of thing ... leave only the bus.gif (actual name of the graphic)... then save your changes ... then go back and upload your page again and ANY graphics on that page.

To keep images from "pulling off the A or C drive":

You MUST have all your files on the SAME drive BEFORE you design a page. In other words, you cannot save your  index file on your hard drive and pull images from your "A" drive. You need to get ALL your files (html, gif, jpg) on the SAME drive! That is the answer ... if you do that you won't have that problem EVER again!

21.  Problem: Don't KNow HOW to make a LINK

FIX: Open your page in FrontPage Express and follow these directions:

1) highlight the words in the table (like "bibliography")

2) click LINK

3) type in the URL for the page (like:

http://www.wku.edu/~yourusername/bib.html

4) do that for each page substituting the "bib" for the other files names.

5) click SAVE

6) upload your page to the WKU server.

22.  Problem: Dr. Petty "fixed" my page and I DO NOT want to copy the OLD file on my computer
OVER the fixed file

FIX:

1. BE SURE you go to your URL ( index file or whatever file you are working

with) on the Internet

2. Click on FILE

3. Click on EDIT PAGE

This will open your page in FrontPage Express  (or whatever software composing program you are using) 4. Click SAVE AS 5. And Save the page OVER your OLD html page ... if you don't do this, the next time you edit your html page on your hard drive (or your A drive) you will LOSE all the changes I just made for you ... please don't do that!

23.  Problem: Email does not work

FIX: Make SURE you typed in mailto: before your email address. It should

look like this: mailto:pam@pampetty.com

24.  Problem: You made changes and uploaded the file(s) but when you go on the Internet and look you see the SAME OLD page.

FIX: Click RELOAD or REFRESH in your Browser so your computer will pull the NEW version off the Internet instead of using the one in your cache.

HOpefully you won't have any of these buggers, but in case you do you should be able to repair the problem yourself with little or no anxiety.

Don't put this off till the last minute, please.

25.  Question:  What is wrong if I edit a page and add a background or graphic, then I move the files to WKU's server and the background/images do not appear?

A.  The problem can likely be fixed by the following:

It may be that the background file (image file) you used on your page was from another drive/folder.  Please do the following:

1)  Go back to where your originally found the graphic file and save it again the same DRIVE and the same FOLDER as your html files.  You could also use Windows Explorer to move the file(s) from one drive/directory to another if you know how to do that.

2)  Open your html file in FrontPage Express

3)  Put the background image (or other graphics) back on your webpage and make SURE you are browsing from the same DRIVE and FOLDER as where your html files are stored.

4)  Save your html file.

5) FTP the html file you edited AND the image files from the same DRIVE and FOLDER to WKU's server.

6)  Open your webpage in a browser window.  Click RELOAD OR REFRESH so that the files will pull from the server and not the cache of your computer.  You should see your page exactly as you designed it.

Another problem might be that you failed to click PUBLIC when you FTP'ed the graphics/html files.

Yet another problem might be that you need to double-check the NAME of the files you moved to ensure that you moved the files you used on the page.

26.  To find and use FrontPage Express once you have downloaded it to your computer:

1) Click START ... Click on FrontPage Express to open the program.

2) Once you open FrontPage Express click on FILE and then OPEN ...

3) Browse to find your html files and then open, edit and save them.

27.  To use the WebQuest Templates:

1) Go to the templates in your browser ...

2) Click on EDIT ... Then on SELECT ALL ... Then on COPY ...

3) In FrontPage Express click on FILE and then NEW ...

4) put your mouse on the page and press the space bar or click your cursor on the page (that just gets the computer's attention that you want the next action to be ON that blank page)

5) Click on EDIT ... Then on PASTE ...

6) the template will be pasted into FrontPage Express where you can edit and save the changes.

All pages AND graphics files are then uploaded to WKU's server via the FTP program.
