Workshop focus:

  1. The manner in which Bluegrass music relates to national and state mandated curriculum standards.
  2. Specific content taught in conventional K-12 curriculum.
  3. Exemplary Bluegrass focused lessons with supporting materials.
  4. The use of graphic organizers.
  5. Web sites to support instruction.

The workshop will demonstrate how both factual and higher order thinking skills may be addressed as students encounter the Bluegrass tradition. Typical of the diversity in the discussion will be a twelfth grade creative writing lesson based on the life of Bill Monroe which results in writing ballads, haiku, and cinquain and a third grade lesson dealing with Bill Monroe and the characteristics of Bluegrass using “Blue Moon of Kentucky,” “Thank God for Kentucky,” photos, and maps. Teachers will be involved throughout the workshop.
