| A note from Dr. Petty regarding teaching with humor:
I recommend the following resources for teachers who recognize the power of
using humor as an instructional strategy. I believe that bored
people are not learning people.
Humor As an Instructional Defibrillator: Evidence-Based Techniques in Teaching and Assessment by Ronald A. Berk - Publisher: Stylus Publishing (VA); 1st ed edition (October 1, 2002) ISBN: 1579220630

Teaching and Learning Fun

| Building Classroom Libraries Children need access to literature for content learning and for pleasure reading. Well-stocked classroom libraries allow students to have constant access to good books. Here are some suggestions for building a classroom library: 1) Look for and write grants 2) Participate in more than one book club: Scholastic, Troll, Golden, etc. Encourage parents to purchase books that relate to themes or science/social studies/math content that will be happening in your classroom throughout the year. A well-timed newsletter to parents stapled to the book order forms will serve that purpose as will highlighting the books for parents during open houses, parent-teacher conferences and other instances where you have the opportunity to share classroom learning with parents. 3) Investigate to find out what organizations or clubs are in your area to see if you can get them to "adopt" your classroom for the purpose of building a strong classroom library. 4) Look on-line to see what types of offers or deals are available to make the BEST use of any funds you have available to you. One example might be this website for the Literacy Empowerment Foundation: http://www.colorcodedbooks.org/lef/index.htm. They offer FREE books, matching funding for book expenditures, and several other incentives that aid teachers in building classroom libraries. These books do not serve the same purpose as the trade books listed below, but they do provide books for Self-Selected Reading, for connections to content areas, and for high-interest/low-readability for primary children. 5) Design a "book tree" or other visual that allows you to post the titles of desired literature so that parents and others might be able to "pick" an apple off the tree and purchase a book that they know will fit into what you do in your classroom. Suggest these books instead of any holiday or end-of-the-year "teacher" gifts. |
