Task 4
Vocabulary Instruction/Development

Definition:

Process

Concepts epitomized by the grapheme/phoneme correlation flaunt themselves as insurmountable to unsuspecting individuals in certain circumstances.  In other words (and aren't you glad there ARE other words!), words we don't know can trip us up.

It is important to the author of this WebQuest that you repeat the next sentence a minimum of 25 times EVERY time you feel tempted to DO what this sentence suggests.  Ok, ready?  Let's give it a shot.  Hidden below in the gray box is the mystery sentence.  Put your mouse at the green dot and drag your mouse over the box and the words will appear.  The magic is two-fold:

                1)  the TRUTH was there all along and you just didn't see it;

                2)  once you stop doing the wrong thing, your vocabulary instruction WILL improve.

bulletI will NEVER ask students to look words up in a dictionary and write down the definition as a means of students learning new words.
NEVER.  NEVER.  NEVER.

Below are 9 websites that contain information about Vocabulary.  Work with your group or a partner to do the following:

1)  MATERIALS MANAGER should print one graphic organizer for the group and one handout for each person in the group.  These forms will be used to synthesize the following articles.

2)  READER should read the article aloud to the group - skimming and scanning is allowed to move quickly through the information.

3)  ALL group members should take notes on the provided handout.

4)  SCRIBE should then compile ONE graphic organizer that represents consensus from the group.

5)  PRESENTER will share the graphic organizer with the whole group as a comprehensive representation of the readings is compiled.
