Classroom Activities
Objectives:
1. Students should use the books recommended on this page to read independently for pleasure and information.
2. Students should use the links on this page to gain factual information about bears.
Activities:
1. Set up a "bear" reading center in the classroom including many of the books listed below. Students should "click" on the book titles below to read annotations and then select the books they think they might enjoy. After each child reads a book, he or she should fill out a comment block and rating guide in a folder kept for each of the books. Other students can consult the comment blocks and rating to make decisions about which books they would like to read.
2. Students should write a one-minute speech about the book they like the most. This should be a very convincing speech that will persuade others to read the book. Each day students may elect to read (or recite) his or her speech. Records should be kept as to which books the students indicate as the best.
3. Students should click on the links below to visit sites relating to bears. These sites are not annotated on screen. Small groups of students may work together to visit 3 or 4 sites. They should make notes describing some of the features of the site. A scoring guide should be developed that allows students to note the most helpful or informative sites. These annotations and/or rankings can be displayed for others to read and to benefit future classes of students studying bears.
4. Students should develop learning logs or notebooks about bears. Each notebook or log should be divided into categories of facts about bears (i.e., size, diet, oddities, etc). Students should use a variety of materials, including sites listed below, to locate and record information. This information should be shared in group. Any discrepancies in facts should be investigated and resolved. This resolution may involve email or letters to authorized personnel or agencies who are experts on bears.
