January - May 2004
The Dollar General Literacy Foundation grant awarded to Dr. Pamela Petty and Dr. Sherry Powers, Literacy Program, Western Kentucky University allowed the establishment of an Adult Literacy Clinic at WKU. The Adult Literacy Clinic functioned from January 2004 through May 10, 2004 and focused on the particular literacy needs of adult learners in Warren County and surrounding counties. The Clinic used graduate students enrolled in an adult literacy course specifically designed to prepare them to deliver exemplary literacy instruction, including proper assessments, selection of appropriate materials, and planning individualized literacy learning plans for adult learners at Levels 1 and 2 as defined by the state of Kentucky. The Dollar General Literacy Foundation made it possible for adult learners to receive scholarships (fee-waivers) and the necessary assessment and learning materials to fit their individual needs.
Accomplishments
Development of the Adult Literacy Clinic at Western Kentucky University has had some far reaching benefits to both adult educators and adult learners in the state of Kentucky. The adult educators represented four counties in Kentucky and over 187 non-literate adults/families. Eight of those adult literacy learners participated in weekly clinical experiences on Western Kentucky University’s campus in Bowling Green. Of those eight, one has entered a school to prepare him to be a truck driver, two have passed the GED, three continue to work with one of our adult educators at the Bowling Green Adult Learning Center, and one attended his first college course at the Bowling Green Community College on August 24, 2004. Feedback Regarding Adult Literacy Clinic
Received via email 08-25-04:
Hi Pam,
I was just emailing to thank you for the program you provided for the literacy program that included some of the people at Trade School back early this year. My husband goes to reading at Trade School and attended the program at Western you had. He has done so well and is so glad the program is still going at trade school. He thinks highly of you and your program so I just wanted to thank you and that he has the opportunity to continue in his reading.
