Graduate Student - Rachel Hanger   TPH 215
Topic:  Motivation and Comprehension through Trade Books
Focus:
I want to use trade books, along with strategies such as utilizing schema, accessing background/prior knowledge, questioning, etc. to develop reading comprehension.  My other intent is to help ESL students develop or enhance motivation to read books outside of required texts using book/character talks, timelines, using the Library in TPH, using the Internet to find and evaluate readings, etc.
Graduate Student -  Marilyn Dyer    TPH 304
Topic:
FORMAT – We will discuss both fiction and non-fiction texts.

February 27 Wednesday College Reading Success - Meet with Topical Focus Groups

Amanda Turner - Room 338:  "To, Too, and Two". We will explore homonyms, homophones, homographs, and heteronyms. We are going to study some of the words that make the English language so confusing with like spellings, sounds, and meanings.

Marilyn Dyer - TPH 304 - Title:  "Understanding Text Structure".  We will look at the five different types of organizational patterns:  description; sequence; cause/ effect; problem/ solution; and compare/ contrast.  By understanding how a text is organized and looking for "signal" or "key" words, comprehension of material will increase.  We will practice by reading several articles to determine their structure and discuss our understanding of the content.

Rachel Hanger - Lesson Title:  You. Me. Us: Crossing the Bridge of the Cultural gap (session 1 of 2) TPH 215.  The purpose of this session is to focus on how our background and prior experiences affects the ability to comprehend text when reading.  Done in a round-table format, participants are encouraged to share their own reading experiences and challenges currently being faced in regards to background knowledge relating to reading comprehension.  This session will end with a book talk, with participants encouraged to attend the 2nd session next week.

Brandon Minton - Room 404 - Title:  Using the Internet to Build Background Knowledge.  This week I will discuss the Internet as a source for knowledge within our Literacy tasks.  I will discuss websites and strategies to use to effectively build schema and knowledge about expository reading tasks.
