NOTE:  You may do these projects with a partner or individually.  You may decide to partner with someone for any one or more of the five required projects.

1.  Log onto Blackboard and find our course (LTCY 518).

2.  Click on Course Documents.

3.  Find:  518 Fab 5 Planning Guides (Word doc) by clicking HERE Use these tables as planning guides for your projects.

4.  Plan ONE project for EACH of the 5 reading components.  A "project" is more than a lesson - it is a collection of concerted efforts and a blending of resources to specifically address a series of learning goals.  In other words, I am not looking for a "phonics lesson" you would teach.  I am looking for a collection of ideas for how you would use technology and a variety of resources (print and electronic) to ensure that the way you teach phonics is integrated into the larger picture of literacy development using the most appropriate and supportive technologies available.

NOTE:  I realize that some of you never teach beginning readers, however, as advanced reading professionals (once you complete your MAE-Literacy) you need to have experience with all aspects of the reading process.  If you teach older students and want to make immediate application of the phonemic awareness and phonics lessons you plan, you may plan them for English Language Learners.  You will find several resources and ideas for helping ESL students with beginning reading.

5.  Start by brainstorming applications you already know and then by listing possible search terms to use when locating new ones.  You may use the following resources to help you select all the types of technologies you might want to include in your projects:
Software/Applications Competencies
Electronic Resources Competencies (Internet)

6.  You will note that there are choices within each of the Fab 5 - you do NOT need to plan a project for multiple items within each of the five main headings (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension).  Instead, you may select any ONE descriptor under "Teaching Recommendation from the NRP Report" in each of the five main headings.  This allows you choice and to focus on instruction you think might improve your current reading teaching.

7.  Use the Project Plan for Model Reading and Technology Integrated Instruction for each project.

8.  Do not use software applications that are not available to the public (some schools purchase streaming videos that are really excellent, but do not include those in your projects as part of our goal is to contribute to the resources out there for all teachers and many/most will not have access).

9.  Use ideas and resources from your textbook (being sure to include APA references to the text).

10.  All NETS for Teachers  (1-4 - # 5 is exempt from this assignment) must be met within the 5 project plans.

11.  At some point within your projects you must demonstrate that you can use:

12.  Your projects should include multi-media.  In other words, I will at some point find at least one scanned image, at least one jpg from a digital picture you took, at least one example of a photo before and after you edited it ... you get the idea.  You may and likely will have MULTIPLES of each of these, but there must be at least one.  Do not just say "I will use a graphjam I designed to demonstrate to students the portion of the English language that is phonetically consistent" - actually make one and include it.  If you include it in your plan, you have to make it and include it.

13.  How to begin:

  1. Print all necessary documents. I would lay them all out on a big table and put this together as a "puzzle" - then color code my projects, put them in file folders and add to them.  I would also start an electronic file folder for each project so that I could quickly and easily access and add to my projects as I develop them.

  2. Put each of the items in #11 listed above on 4 x 6 cards.

  3. Use the Fab 5 Planning Guide to brainstorm what you already have or know about.

  4. Decide which Teaching Recommendation you want to pursue in each of the 5 main categories.

  5. Determine which Common Core Standards for English/Language Arts fit within your projects.

  6. Make lists of terms to search - use a variety of search engines (Google, Bing, etc.).  If you need more help in determining which search engines you need to use to find what you want, try NoodleTools

  7. Think big - I do not want to see if you can plan a single comprehension lesson to go with a particular reading.  I want you to demonstrate that you can set up a "system" by which you integrate technology as a means of teaching reading.  In a way, I suppose you could think of it as a "generic" plan - a series of instructional methods that could be used with a variety of genre, subjects, and purposes.  You would give a concrete example of how the system would work so that it is clear what you propose.  Let's say you are going to use youtube videos as a method of activating schema to promote comprehension.  You would talk us through the process/purposes and then demonstrate with an example of using a specific youtube to provide background information prior to a specific reading, i.e., using http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-MuWDsv5pg paired with a graphic organizer (http://www.englishcompanion.com/Tools/notemaking.html) to provide background knowledge for reading The Watsons go to Birmingham (http://www.pampetty.com/novelunit.htm).  In this example, the idea of using video combined with active viewing (the graphic organizer) would be a model that could be replicated for other books, readings, subjects, etc.  Please note that this is a brief example and not the depth that would be expected in a fully developed project.

  8. Use the rubric for this assignment to guide you in determining depth and quality of your work.

  9. All projects should be uploaded in Blackboard.

  10. For your first project, I myself will be available to you (by a variety of venues both electronic and face to face if you like) to help you get started and wrap your mind around what is expected.  Come to me with at least a kernel of an idea and I will help you grow it.
