The following information is from LTCY 320 and is included for LTCY 420 students who have not yet developed a Phonics Kit.  You are NOT required to make an entire kit in LTCY 420 if you have not already done so.  Your requirement is to teach one phonics lesson that fits the requirements as outlined on this webpage (an extension of our syllabus).

As part of teaching reading, teachers must be able to provide sound word recognition skills and strategies.  This includes a thorough understanding of the terminology and concepts related to phonics instruction.  Developing a phonics "kit" will allow you to begin and develop materials for teaching phonics.  Students should use notes from chapter 3 in Burns, Roe, Smith (word recognition) and other recommended resources (see below)  to determine the types of phonics skills and strategies that should be taught.  A Phonics Kit should include the following:

  1. A variety of games and manipulatives (with instructions) that provide practice in manipulating the sound system of the English language.
  2. A minimum of 5 phonics skills must be targeted and games (manipulatives) should be developed to provide student practice with those skills.  .
  3. Materials should be NEATLY done and should provide ACCURATE practice of the designated skill/strategy.
  4. Creativity is a part of this assignment.  Use of uncommon items, interesting visuals, etc., would be ways of promoting student  interest and excitement in using these teaching materials.
  5. You may use "pre-designed" materials (from on-line or purchased) as long as they are used in a "unique" manner and you develop them into a game or other type manipulative activity.
  6. Preview the "Phonics Tool Kit" located here:  http://doe.state.in.us/publications/phonics.html
NOTE:  This document is very large (excess of 80 pages).  Please do not print it out from the computers in Tate Page Hall 215.
  7. View the Online Streaming Video explaining Phonics Tool Kit (part 1 and part 2).  You will likely get ideas from these videos of games and manipulatives that facilitate phonics instruction.

This phonics site has beginning and ending, as well as short vowel sounds.  Children will click on the pictures with the same sound as, for instance, short u in tub.  Very much like colorful, interactive online worksheets.  Stories are interspersed at appropriate intervals.  Also see the preschool phonics and reading site.
