As indicated on our syllabus, read Chapter 1 of Roe, Smith, Burns and do the following:

In preparation for our class on Tuesday, TPH 215, 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. please bring your text (Roe, Smith, Burns) and simply open it up to the questions at the end of chapter one ... there you should draw a vertical line down the middle of the blanks beside each of the T/F questions.  On the LEFT side of the vertical line mark your "pre-reading" answers.  AFTER you read the chapter go back to the questions at the end of the chapter and respond on the RIGHT side of the vertical line with your  a "post-reading" answers.  This will serve as our "anticipation guide" for chapter one.  To get credit for this assignment (10 points), you need only to show the page  with your pre/post answers marked on there.  If you don't want to mark in your book then you can put the answers on another sheet of paper. Make a list of any questions or need for clarifications you might have and bring them to class on Tuesday, May 10.

To read more about using Anticipation Guides, click on the resources listed below and include these in your Strategies Toolkit:

Chapter 2 - Emergent Litearcy (Roe, Smith, Burns)

KWHL:

You should read the directions at the top of the KWHL form and then fill out the K section as it pertains to chapter 2 ... what do you already know about the term "emergent literacy" ... look at the graphic of the contents of chapter two .. what else to do you already know about some of those concepts?

Then you fill out the W ... What would you LIKE to know ... here you list some questions or topics that you would like to know as it pertains to the content in chapter 2.

Then you fill out the H section of the chart ... How will you find out ... certainly your will list chapter 2 of our text as  your primary source ... you will likely list ME as another source, and possibly some on-line research that you do on your own.  You may think of other things here.

Then AFTER  (and as) you read the chapter you fill out the L section:  What you learned from reading chapter 2 ... You will want to make sure you answer as many of the items listed in the "W" section as you can.  You may also want to make notes beside the things you listed in the "K" column as you REVISE what you already knew (in case what you read is different from what you believed at first).

That's it.  You bring the completed chart to class (it may be a few pages long and can be handwritten).  We will build a JOINT one in class and discuss chapter two.  The purpose is to help you interact with the print as you read and AVOID PASSIVE reading.

(NOTE:  Smart people compose their responses in Microsoft Word and then copy and paste the text into Blackboard - if you type directly into a window in Blackboard and then the page crashes and does not send, your writing is gone, gone, gone.)

ONLY # 1, 2, and 3 apply to May 2005

1.  READ the syllabus carefully when preparing assignments.  I will use EXACTLY what is in the syllabus to devise rubrics for scoring each assignment.
2.  HANDWRITING EXAM - Check Blackboard under Course Documents to find the websites I you need to visit - they show the handwriting styles.  Be prepared to print one sentence in Zaner-Bloser style and one in D'Nealian style.  Be prepared to write on sentence in cursive in Zaner-Bloser style and one in D'Nealian style.  We will do this exam in CLASS together.  You will not be allowed to use a sheet that shows the letters during the exam.  You need to bring a couple of sheets of paper for the exam.  Go to this website and see if you bought paper that looks like this:
http://www.pampetty.com/handwritinglineguide.htm.  You MUST pass competency on this exam.  The exam will be repeated until mastery is achieved - by appointment with me - in my office.
3.  PHONICS EXAM -  It will consist of terminology questions (could be matching, multiple choice, or fill in the blank) and APPLICATION questions.  I will ask you to look at words and identify certain phonics applications.  You will see examples of this here: http://www.pampetty.com/reading.htm - go all the way to the bottom of the page and look for Study Guide for Test 3.  You will not do well on this test if you do not begin studying NOW.  You do not want to miss class on this date.  Phonics generalizations and practice questions are located at:  http://www.pampetty.com/phonics.htm.
4.  FIELD EXPERIENCE MATERIALS include:  1) tally sheet used in Interest Inventory; 2) bibliography of 10 (ten) books based on tally sheet (If you want to include your bibliography in the on-line site I am making, put the biblio in the Dropbox and I will copy it from there.) - be sure and put the "topic" of the book in parenthesis after the bibliographic information; 3) a one-page write up that includes the bibliographic information of the book you read aloud, WHAT you did to include students as you read, and a reflective paragraph of HOW it went (what you would change next time, etc); 4) log-in sheet that your cooperating teacher signed each visit; 5) teacher evaluation sheet.  DO NOT turn these materials in late - you WILL lose points.
5.  BOOKMAKING assignment is worth 50 (FIFTY) points.  Be very attentive to detail.  Follow directions carefully.  Do NOT turn this book in late - you WILL lose points.  I will award 5 bonus points for turning the book in EARLY.  It will work like this:  If you turn the book in prior to due date, I will give you 5 points toward your grade - NOT TO EXCEED 50 points total.  In other words, if you lose points on the assignment, I will add the 5 points on at the end.  If you score a perfect 50 - the 5 points don't do you any good.  http://www.pampetty.com/bookmaking.htm
